The Huangpu Xinxi River Regeneration project is located within Guangzhou’s second central commercial-business zone. It encompasses 3.56 hectares of underdeveloped land around two waterways: the Sanhuchong canal and the Wuchong river. It is near green corridors and part of the livable zone belt but lacks connections.

Huangpu district is undergoing vast changes as it diversifies industries, upgrades facilities, and aspires to improve the quality of life for its citizens. The river regeneration plan in Xinxi provides a framework to move forward with development in a way that honors the local culture, prioritizes its natural resources, and unifies the district. The goal is for the river to integrate with adjacent cities and landscapes by connecting the bicycle and pedestrian paths all throughout and developing an environment that is comfortable, welcoming, and romantic.

The two waterways, from being undercelebrated areas in the village, become stages for public life, not just for special occasions but daily activities. The canal closer to the commercial parcels becomes a creative lifestyle spine full of retail and dining that function as urban living rooms for those who work and live in the area. Meanwhile, the riverbanks become energetic green shores functioning as the city’s ecological corridor and preserving the village’s historical structures while taking cues from the strong boat culture of Southern China. The programs for each section are determined by the relationship with the uses adjacent to them, from residential, commercial, to educational. These two water axes are linked by two perpendicular streets that become the main conduits for pedestrians between the two edges of Xinxi.

Reconnecting these two is essential for providing a new unique experience for the future Huangpu and bringing people back to the waterfront. It can serve as an example for more developments in the city of Guangzhou.
