WM Hotel, Hong Kong

This project is a hotel development in the tranquil Sai Kung seaside that calls for an iconic and harmonic response to the nature to give a new definition to Sai Kung.



Sai Kung is a traditional customs of rural village, described as the ‘back garden’ of Hong Kong. There are numerous scenic spots and regional marine resources. Visitors can stroll around the regional center market of Sai kung Town, feast on seafood or enjoy diverse delicate at both eastern and western pubs and restaurants.



The architects’ vision is to create a contemporary statement with a rural overtone. The nicely integrates yet discrete building blocks reinterpret the diverse lifestyle experience by hotel, retail and various leisure activities.

Distinguished into human scale blocks, the development takes on the shape of fishing boat, as a gesture of Sai Kung Pasts. The facade is constructed with various shades of timber and white aluminum panels; the contrast in colors elevates the building’s stature to a more dynamic, three-dimensional body.



During the course of the design, orientation of the rooms has been thoughtfully designed and adjusted to acquire a better view to maximize the frontage to sea view. The overall organization of the hotel is described in a ‘zig zag’ composition to achieve this objective. The ‘Zig Zag’ composition, as well as the introduction of curves to the interconnecting massing, create voids for two sunken plazas. To maximize the sea view, a chapel is designed at the center of the plaza to be prominent to the human flow from the Sai kung town center.



On one hand, a set of stairs lead up to a chapel in the wedding garden and banqueting function, are ideal places for ceremonial photo taking. On the other hand, an amphitheater seating area is created for events and performances; visitors can discover and indulge in food and beverages along the water front - Combining commercial, entertainment and services against the backdrop of an exquisite sea view, a zestful leisure destination is created.
