Suzhou HSR New Town Lighting Upgrade & Planning Design

This lighting project for Suzhou HSR New Town includes eight high rises, a central water street, and a commercial

complex. The buildings are minimalistic and modern with a sense of class that the lighting needs to match. The main

buildings were done with 4000k light, while the others and places near the ground were done with 3000k, producing a

cool-warm contrast.

The two buildings in front of the station are the windows to and publicity spokesmen for the city, so we used

monochrome pixels to exhibit a balance between display and style. We like to use different color temperatures in cities

instead of large areas of color and bring in the natural interplay of cool and warm temperatures, but a city needs color,

so we intentionally used two different systems. We primarily focused on detailed quality in illumination, restraining our

use of light and translating quality into taste of the zone and impart a sense of trust.

For the water street, surrounded by buildings, we tried to satisfy the diverse needs of people with creative, interesting,

poetic, comfortable lighting. Under bridges, separated RGB monochrome lighting at night simply illuminates when no

one is around, but when someone approaches, the separated colors create a personalized, dynamic light show on the

walls and ground with the person’s shadow. The red steel pedestrian bridges are practical and the crowning touch of the

overall design, making the bridges, their silhouettes, their reflections, and the people who use them beautiful.

Quality and freedom in lighting boost nightlife quality. Many facets of the Suzhou HSR New Town are visible: natural

areas, construction zones, wetlands, completed buildings, and a lot of emptiness. As it is sure to thrive, it needs to have

a good start!
