Situated in Shanghai along the Huangpu River, the narrow piece of land where Meituan Headquarters located, is one of the cradles of China’s modern industry and represented the rise and fall of industry for a century. Inspired by “Industrial Components”, the design forms bridges between the office spaces across the site. Through this link to the industrial past, it fits harmoniously within the riverfront area and its surrounding character.
The building complex is oriented towards the river and the magnificent Yangpu Bridge. The connecting horizontal volumes are designed to maximize this view, and with elegant copper-glass façades to enhance the Industrial look. Green spaces are integrated between office workspaces for the wellbeing of people, whilst injecting green space to enhance the city neighborhood, minimizing energy consumption and reducing the heat island effect. Commercial space is mainly concentrated in the lower floors and towards the river, which creates a vivid and relaxing atmosphere. The design’s form steps up in height across the site to symbolize Meituan company’s present success and its growth for the future.
The design reflects the heritage and history of Shanghai. It turned a contemporary headquarters into a unique and powerful landmark, while retaining the historical memories and integrate it into the vibrant cityscape.
