The Dragon and Phoenix are believed to be the perfect couple in Chinese Feng Shui, symbolising good fortune, everlasting love and marital happiness. During the 1960s to 1980s, people in Hong Kong were eager to host wedding dinners in traditional Chinese restaurants designed with Dragon and Phoenix banquet grand halls. However, this tradition just became “old school” when the younger generation gradually moved towards Western-style wedding decorations.
The owner of this project is passionate about Hong Kong's traditional culture. He has sourced and collected carvings of the two auspicious creatures from old Chinese restaurants over the years in the hope of preserving the heritage and craftsmanship.
Located in Tsim Sha Tsui, a vibrant and trendy district in Hong Kong, this 1,500-square-metre restaurant specialises in hosting wedding banquets with one Chinese-style and one Western-themed halls. The Chinese hall is furnished with the rescued carvings without sacrificing the overall modern design of the dining space. What really steals the show is the Dragon and Phoenix backdrops on either side of the stage, recalling the collective memory of Hong Kong people. Moreover, the backdrops can be rotated easily by Bluetooth remote control to turn into two LED screens for playing videos during different events.
The coexistence of the two halls, which occupy both ends of the long, spacious dining space respectively, exudes a unique blend of East meet West atmosphere. Grey marble walls, wooden wall panels and chinoiserie wallpapers in delicate flowers and birds patterns together set a harmonious and splendid background where traditional and contemporary styles are equally attractive.
A Chinese button knot is added on each dining chair as a loving design detail to wish all guests good luck. An abstract patterned carpet in red tones that signifies happiness in Chinese culture and a round, glittering chandelier that represents reunion add a complete touch to the combined hall.
The ceiling rails are carefully positioned with several sets of movable screens to versatilely divide the space into different sizes, making the restaurant perfect for holding a birthday party or an annual dinner.
