Located at Lake Tegernsee in Germany’s Bavarian Alps, the Caro&Selig, Tegernsee, Autograph Collection exemplifies Marriott’s brief to uniquely express the brand’s DNA: one-of-a-kind hotels with originality, clear vision, soul, and stories making them individual and special, ‘Exactly Like Nothing Else’. Inspired by Germany’s 19th-century monarch, Queen Caroline of Bayern (Bavaria), the new-build was envisioned as a sanctuary for restoration. Recognising the ever-increasing need to escape busy lives, the design reflects the tranquil surrounds with FF&E conscientiously selected to help the hotel seek Gold LEED certification. A collector of art by women, Queen Caroline is honoured through interiors celebrating her spirituality, femininity, and egalitarian values. Her love for Lake Tegernsee and mission to spread happiness inspired the hotel’s name, since she is affectionately called ‘Caro’ and ‘Selig’ means "blessed." Public spaces layer art-infused feminine and Bavarian touches. The fireplace’s ceramic cladding creatively depicts Caro, while a shelf displays a vase shaped like a traditional porcelain urn but, in a modern twist, is crafted from glass shards. Infusing contemporary vibes into an historic bräustüberl (brewhouse), the restaurant features wooden beams suggestive of rustic timber roofs, plus a stove lined with abstract tiles. A local muralist painted the ceiling with lüftlmalerei, an Upper Bavarian art form, while mixed modern and traditional chairs feel comfortably eclectic. The spa’s simplicity speaks to Caro’s contemplative nature and the pristine landscape. Flowing curtains separate relaxation chairs in retreat areas, while the fireplace warms guests after swimming.
In a nod to Caro’s open-mindedness, one-third of the 125 guestrooms have open-plan sleeping and bathing spaces yet remain cosy. Witty details noticed upon second glance charm guests with their layered luxury. Porcelain lights with blue cross-stitching recall Bavarian leather trousers, while the soft, bobble-textured rug alludes to the Bavarian flag’s blue and white rhombuses. The washing space offers a modern take on an enamel washbasin custom-designed with a fine blue line around its circumference. Although the toilet is private, the shower is in a semi-transparent glass cube whose special effect makes it seem as if a mist rises up the glazing – an echo of the foggy lake outside.
