The project is located within a Chinese-style private garden in Shanghai. The architectural design emphasizes the Eastern charm, subtlety, and restraint of the building itself. In contrast, the interior design primarily conveys the emotions that the homeowner wishes to express through the space. She desires an interior that is understated, not ostentatious, yet rich in texture and detail.
In alignment with these desires, the structural design maintains an Eastern expression – one that is implicit and restrained. The spaces are separated, with areas getting larger as you move further in and gradually smaller as you progress. Various screen installations within the space serve to add an exploratory dimension and atmosphere, delaying the presentation of beautiful scenery through winding paths and hidden corners.
In terms of color, a combination of wood and cyan is used as the base. The term "青绶" (qīng shòu) refers to the ribbon used to tie an official seal or insignia in ancient China. During the Han Dynasty, there were four levels of insignia, with "金印紫绶" (jīn yìn zǐ shòu) for the Prime Minister and Chancellor, and "银印青绶" (yín yìn qīng shòu) for the Grand Imperial Censor. "青绶" (qīng shòu), in this context, signifies the blue sash that accompanies the seal ribbon, exuding an air of nobility.
In both the color and spatial structure design, as well as in the artistic installations, there isn't a deliberate overuse of overtly Chinese elements. Instead, the focus is on creating a holistic spatial atmosphere that embodies the spirit of the place, which is both Eastern and modern, with a sense of subtlety and sophistication.
