The preliminary design of the revolutionary culture exhibition hall was centered closely around a revolutionary outlook - that “The red flags fluttering in the wind are picturesque”- as depicted by Mao Zedong while in a march. The theme of revolutionary culture was used to effectively integrate the combat elements of the Red Army and present them in an elegant way. Plain and elegant hues were fused as embellishment and to enhance the visual experience of exhibition. The four main colors extracted - “torch red”, “uniform blue”, “dawn yellow”, and “bitter grey” - were combined with multimedia, artworks and objects to add new glory to the old revolutionary base.
The highlight of the project was the adoption of tailored racks of structural steel coated with art paint. In view of the fact that an ancient building, as a non-renewable resource, bears important witness to the evolution of human civilization and has its particular value for visiting and research, tailored display racks were adopted in spatial design so as to avoid secondary damage to the building. Tailored racks could be so flexible, and varied in form, that there could be partial openwork allowing visitors to see the building as it is. Considering the particularity of the building as a wooden construction, the project management followed the principle of “fire-free welding” - no use of naked fire and no welding operations inside the hall.
To further shorten the construction period, the construction workers, upon the availability of building materials, arranged in advance for the layout and planning of the materials, and optimized the use of racks once again, so that such problems as a longer time for customization and installation were solved while the building was well protected, significantly shortening the construction time.
On environmental protection, “fire-free welding” was adopted to protect the building. So far as sustainable development is concerned, we excavated many artifacts in the process of restoration of the residence, and adopted those of historical significance as part of the restoration.
