In the heart of this transformative bathroom renovation lies a vision: to create a space that seamlessly integrates functionality, accessibility, and aesthetics, setting a new standard in healthcare design. This design has been meticulously crafted to meet the stringent requirements of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). With wide doorways, a zero-transition floor and an open plan layout, this space will accommodate wheelchair movement effortlessly. Moreover, we understand that accessible bathroom design goes far beyond adding grab rails and installing zero transition floors. Every single fixture placement has been thoughtfully planned to optimise useability and maximise accessibility. This strategic design is demonstrated in subtle ways that may only be apparent to someone who has had to face difficulty with accessibility in the past. Through research we learnt that positioning the pneumatic flush-buttons on the nib wall beside the toilet eliminates the need for the user to stretch behind the toilet once they are reseated in their wheelchair. A hand spray, with a concealed drain underneath, enables the user to clean independently and discreetly, facilitating the emptying of stoma bags without any need for embarrassment. The basin and shower mixers are positioned away from the outlets, allowing easy access for both the user and a support person to check the water temperature and turn on and off without overextending. The custom-built recessed cabinet with a sliding mirror door not only provides accessible storage for toiletries and medical supplies, but also allows the user to view their outfit comfortably from a seated position. Beyond this, by embracing an attractive modern design that challenges the clinical stereotype of an accessible bathroom, the space feels inviting, warm, and personal. Natural light floods the room and accentuates the carefully chosen colour palette that echoes nature’s soothing tones with designer finishes. Each morning the user enters a space that respects their needs and dignity, without constant reminders of their medical journey. This bathroom renovation design is a celebration of inclusivity that proves a universally accessible space can embody timeless beauty without hint of a clinical atmosphere, nurturing the physical and emotional well-being of everyone who enters.
