This project is a club space on the bank of Qiantang River, adjacent to the river view, and tailored for business receptions and negotiations. The preliminary space only retains a basic building frame without clear indoor and outdoor boundaries. Inspired by the design concept of traditional Chinese garden architecture, the designer starts to create this project. With the clear boundaries of the modern indoor space blurred, certain elements such as flowers, trees, stones, pools and lakes are properly used to divide the whole space. As a result, traditional landscape elements link all functional spaces and make a trade-off between traditional and modern elements. Without compromising the functional integrity of the space, the interior space is blended with an abundance of natural elements such as plants, rocks and water flows which accents the creation of classical atmosphere. The designer uses perspective, lightness and weight, and the harmony of yin and yang to create a well-proportioned effect that is perceived partly bright and partly hidden. This design technique highlights the pursuit of virtual-real combination and inclusiveness in Chinese culture, as well as the aesthetic realm of virtual-real combination and natural obscurity as reflected in traditional Chinese architecture. It is also noted that the blurring of space boundaries does not imply a blurring of spatial hierarchy and function, but the designer still focuses on how to show hierarchy and order. This overall design concept reconciles with the business negotiation and reception purpose of the space, fosters a warm, special and inspirational environment for users, and reveals the specific meaning of the space by means of symbolic design.
