Tannery Workshop of the IBC of 3515 Factory

The main objective of the project is to conduct protective transformation of some of the old factory buildings of Jihua 3515 Leather Shoes Co., Ltd., a large-scale military backbone enterprise with a history of more than 70 years, engaged in leather making, shoe making, ball making, rubber products, and shoe materials manufacturing, located in Luohe City, Henan Province. The main industrial plant buildings were constructed in the 1950s. Due to urban development and the construction of a new factory area, the old factory buildings have been gradually idle since 2013. The company plans to introduce new functions while preserving the value of the old factory buildings, to continue the factory's heritage and revitalize the old factory buildings. The client requires the adaptive reuse of the old factory buildings to build a leading and first-class functional footwear testing and R&D laboratory in the region. At the same time, the leather workshop will be reused to create a starting area for the revitalization of the old factory area of the 3515 factory, and a "Luohe Sample" for the regeneration of modern industrial factory areas. The design of this project follows the principles of authenticity, integrity, readability, and sustainability, the project aims to explore the potential of historical buildings and give them new functions. At the same time, a sound protection and management mechanism will be established to achieve sustainable development. The essence of the project's transformation is to reconstruct the memory space, connect the relationship between place and people, extend the cultural value of the place, extend the temporal and spatial context of the place, and explore the symbiosis of human and place space interaction and memory.
