In response to Hong Kong's rapidly ageing population, our focus centres on rejuvenating a 50-year-old, 48-square-meter apartment into an age-friendly oasis for a retired couple in their 60s. With projections indicating a near-doubling of the elderly population from 1.45 million in 2021 to 2.74 million in 2046, addressing the specific needs of seniors in compact living spaces is crucial for societal evolution.

Key Design Elements:

1. Adaptable Spaces: Central to our design is the use of sliding partitions, enabling seamless connectivity or separation between rooms. This fosters caregiving ease between the couple and allows future room conversions for guests or a helper's space.

2. Socialisation Hub: The open kitchen design serves as the heart of the living space, encouraging engagement during meal preparation and fostering family bonding, providing a welcoming atmosphere for guests.

3.Natural Ambiance: Thoughtful reconfiguration of living and dining areas maximises natural light infusion, enhancing the apartment's aesthetics while aiding orientation for the elderly. Additionally, integrating a ceiling fan promotes natural ventilation, reducing reliance on artificial cooling systems.

4.Enhanced Circulation: Wide corridors and sliding doors optimise movement, prioritising accessibility and comfort for the elderly occupants within the limited space.

5.Safety-Centric Design: Prioritising safety, walk-in showers replace traditional bathtubs, enhancing ease of use and minimising accident risks.

6.Personalised Storage Solutions: Innovative storage units serve dual functions, offering ample storage while personal displays of cherished items create familiarity and emotional connections within the environment.

This project pioneers senior-friendly living spaces in Hong Kong. The design not only caters to the immediate needs of the retired couple but also anticipates their evolving requirements, ensuring enhanced well-being and comfort in their golden years. By harmonising functionality, adaptability, and aesthetics, this design sets a new standard for age-friendly living spaces, responding to the changing landscape of Hong Kong's demographics.
