Sticking to a contemporary theme throughout, the design has combined light grey tones with the highest quality wood veneer and horizontally patterned marble flooring to create a sense of visual connection and continuity. Textures such as custom-made terrazzo, with a subtle sparkle, add depth; mixed metals are incorporated into fixtures and fittings, like the gold stainless steel and black metal pendant in the dining room, which lift the mood of the neutral palette and imbue the home with understated yet timeless glamour.
Different wall treatments provide creative as well as practical solutions to design challenges. A mirror wall in the entrance hall enlarges the visual space and reflects natural light into an otherwise dark corridor. In the dining room, a hand-painted, sliding glass door encloses the kitchen when needed but can be pushed open to create a more expansive feel. It is decorated with work by deceased Swedish artist Ulrica Hydman-Vallien. It celebrates her memory but is also an art piece in its own right, the main focal point of the room and more interesting than a regular wall or door. Upstairs in the master suite, a full-height fabric headboard is another striking alternative to wallpaper while a dramatic floor-to-ceiling door can close off the study area or function as a partition.
Continuing the theme of practical creativity is the matt black metal shelving unit with concealed lighting, positioned next to the staircase. Meeting the floor at one point only, it stretches up to the ceiling and seems to float across the living room wall. It looks more like an art piece when empty, particularly when paired with a sculptural music speaker, but it also acts as a backdrop to the couple’s collection of display objects.
The designer even had plans for the powder room to look playful and fancy. Located under the stairs, its structural beam and low ceiling added to the design challenge. Designer designed a curved veneer ceiling to turn these “flaws” into features and extended the visual space with a grey mirror wall on one side.
