....In-Between ……Future Social Vessel



The project aims to create a highly integrated and vibrant neighbourhood, bringing fresh energy to Nanjing's new green city centre.



Inspired by Nanjing's historical reputation as a landscaped Stone City, we build on the notion of "Mountains and In-Between spaces" in Chinese landscape paintings to refine the future mixed-use paradigm. To highlight the role of Public Spaces (In-Between spaces) as social vessels, we designed a retail street offering rich programs to integrate and activate the buildings (Mountains). A dynamic mixed-used environment that facilitates human interaction comes into being.

Seamlessly connected to the surrounding central park and creek, the project is a headquarters for a leading parent-child services enterprise, with two office towers and two service apartments atop a two- or three-storey retail podium. The podium, designed to be as open and porous as possible, embraces the linear open retail street, which acts as the central spine for public activities or urban events. A series of park-facing and creek-facing plazas and platforms were designed along the journey to maximize engagement with nature.



This project envisions a new type of human-scale community and living, where "In-Between" public spaces reinforce a hyper-local, integrated micro-city.
