The project is located in Chaoyang, Liaoning, China. The city has a long history and was historically known as Longcheng. It was founded in 341 AD and served as the capital of the Three Yan during the Jin and Sixteen Kingdoms period of ancient China. The project draws on traditional Chinese culture, incorporating elements of Eastern elegance and poetic living into daily life, and uses modern design techniques to express the essence of Chinese aesthetics. The owner is a local Confucian businessman who has been deeply influenced by traditional Chinese studies from a young age, valuing Confucian principles, tea culture, and traditional Chinese painting. The requirement for this residence is to blend the strengths of both traditional Chinese and modern styles, incorporating the ceremonial formality and decorum of Chinese culture with the comfort and simplicity of modern practicality. The design follows the owner's taste and functional needs, using wood, stone, and fabric—three major traditional Chinese materials—as mediums. It extracts and deconstructs elements from Chinese landscape painting, such as blank spaces, sloped roofs, ink wash, and carvings, focusing on the essence rather than the form of traditional Chinese aesthetics. The color scheme is clean and fresh, using large areas of warm white and natural wood tones to create a soothing living environment. Symmetrical compositions are prevalent throughout, reflecting the owner's upright and restrained character while directly expressing the essence of Chinese spirit. The space features several luxurious stone accents, whose textures echo the ink wash of traditional Chinese paintings, evoking a sense of wandering through landscapes and filtering out the mundane and noisy aspects of everyday life. The ceiling design enhances the spatial height with a combination of a flat top and spherical corners, adding a rhythmic beauty to the space. Embedded metal lines outline intricate details, complementing the cabinet door design. The colors and shapes of the furniture and accessories are kept understated and restrained, reflecting a modern Eastern aesthetic attitude with measured elegance.
