The case relates to a residential space of three bedrooms and two bathrooms situated in the Yau Tsim Mong district of Hong Kong SAR, China, owned by a middle-aged couple with differing preferences for the design concept of their new dwelling. The husband favored a sophisticated and lavish living space, while the wife preferred a minimalist style. The main task for the designer was to blend and reconcile these two seemingly opposing aesthetic expectations, until a living space that would satisfy both owners is created. Achieving this objective was not only the critical challenge of the design process but also the key to the success of this design case, known as "Hua-Shi", which combines ornate elements with practical ones.Upon entering the interior, the wood cladding on the walls, along with the simple wood cabinetry and the light marble TV backdrop, establish a balanced and restrained ambiance. The selection of colors and materials reflects a design philosophy that conveys depth and quality without redundant ornamentation. This is exactly the unique part of the design. In the finer details, the strategic use of metal ornaments, leather furnishings, and carefully chosen artwork seamlessly blend into the space in an elegant and sophisticated manner, introducing a touch of luxury and enhancing the multi-dimensional nature of the area and the refined sensory experience. The space strikes a moderate balance by avoiding being overly cold or overly intricate, and achieving a state of "balanced mix of simplicity, splendor, intricacy”. The designer uses lighting as a decorative feature in the layout to elevate the ambiance of the area, rather than follow the usual practice of using conventional main light fixtures. The concealed light source harmonizes with the soft furnishings in the uncluttered space, particularly in the bedroom section, where the metal spotlights and the inviting glow of the metal strips on the wall seamlessly intertwine. The designer has achieved a remarkable balance in this ordinary residential design, interpreting the art of blending sophistication and simplicity. The harmonization of these seemingly contradictory aesthetic concepts is a testament to the beauty of this design.
