Located in an old community in Tainan, the 40-year-old three-story building is a row of townhouses with the same appearance and layout. Due to insufficient indoor space, various additions can be seen in the community, which has a negative impact on the community. Therefore, we thought about whether we could revitalize the original compact interior space composition through internalized additions, and preserve the original architectural appearance, so that the traces of old and new things could have corresponding threads and coexist in dialogue with each other.
By converting it into a short-term B&B, the space had the opportunity to be redefined. Therefore, the original four bedrooms were reduced to two bedrooms, and the reduced space was integrated into a light-transmitting patio area, matching the north-south orientation of the building. , introducing natural light from the south, and the light and shadow that changes with time, enriching the appearance of the interior of the space.
The light-transmitting patio area uses corridors, furniture and bedroom openings to form a new communication interface. With the change of door leaves, it can become part of the bedroom or a resting corner outside the bedroom. In addition, there is only one bedroom on each floor. They can also retain their respective privacy, providing opportunities for mutual extension of the relationship between the public and private realms.
The light-transmitting patio area is combined with floors at different levels on the ground floor, extending from the dining table to the living room and kitchen. The floors at different levels correspond to the scale of activities, integrating the public space on the ground floor with the continuity of activities.
As a B&B, the dark-colored atmosphere of the entire room enhances the sense of privacy inside, allowing users to relax and dwell here.
