Junping Street Neighborhood Community Center

The Junping Street Community Complex, situated in the hub of Chengdu's old town, continues the traditional street layout and architectural styles of the Shaocheng district with its distinctive design. It rejuvenates this time-honored urban center, while also preserving and respecting its cultural heritage.

Located at the junction of three roads, on a site that is narrow and irregular, and neighboring a century-old school, Shaocheng Park, and tightly packed multi-story housing, the project faces complex traffic and high volumes of residents and visitors. The design cleverly leverages the irregular shape of the site and its multiple street frontages, and incorporates the building's openness and distinctive form and façade, giving the structure both the weight of history and the vitality of a downtown area. This is not only a redesign of the space but also a heartfelt tribute to the city's memory.

The design has chosen the classical grey bricks from Shaocheng district as the main color of the building, which highlights the historical character of the site while seamlessly blending with its surroundings. The building's form and size align with the street, cleverly integrating into the city's overall layout. Additionally, the design features a semi-outdoor climbing stairway that recreates the historical imagery of Chengdu's city walls, giving the building distinctive spatial features and a landmark presence at the street corner. Moreover, the cantilevered triangular spaces ingeniously address the constraints of the terrain, making the interior space more rectangular and adding both vitality and uniqueness to the lines in the façade.

The Junping Street Community Complex serves as a modern community service center that integrates a wide range of urban services. It provides necessary functions such as community services, local market shopping, and cultural activities to the public, and enriches residents' living experience with its effective use of space and harmonious architectural integration.
