The Transformed Repository is a project located in Detroit, set in a former warehouse with over a hundred years of history. By converting this old industrial space into a library with a coffee shop, the project aims to create more than just a public space; it is a thoughtful reflection on history and the future of Rust Belt factories. The warehouse stands as a symbol of Detroit’s industrial past and its potential future. To breathe new life into the space, the design introduces new volumes within the existing structure to create a double-height space, enhancing the verticality and openness of the interior. Skylights and high clerestory windows are added to bring in natural light, transforming the once-dark industrial setting into a bright, inviting environment. This adaptation not only preserves the building’s historic character but also modernizes it for contemporary use. The Transformed Repository will serve as a cultural hub, a place where community members can gather, learn, and enjoy coffee in a thoughtfully reimagined environment. By repurposing this historic warehouse, the project honors the past while providing a sustainable model for urban renewal, showcasing a vision for the future where old industrial spaces are reborn as vibrant community assets.
