Penglai Old Town Reimagined: Reviving a Historic Jiangnan Town
Nestled at the crossroads of Kunshan, Taicang, and Shanghai, Penglang Old Town is a living relic of Jiangnan’s rich heritage. Once bustling with merchants and culture, its charm has been eroded by time. This restoration project aims to restore its glory, weaving history and modernity into a harmonious tapestry.
Design Philosophy: Life Flows from Water to Streets, and from Streets to Bustling Towns
Inspired by Jiangnan's organic evolution, the project reawakens the spirit of water-driven urban growth. Streets once animated by waterways are being revitalized as lively hubs of culture, commerce, and community.
Preserving the Past, Enriching the Future
Covering 10.32 hectares, with a core focus on 3.8 hectares, the plan safeguards over 20 heritage buildings dating back to the late Qing and Republican eras. Careful restoration honors their historical value while adapting them for contemporary needs. Traditional streets are reimagined with bookstores, teahouses, artisan markets, and performance spaces.
A Community Reborn
The revitalized townscape unfolds through a “one core, five zones” framework, integrating public services, cultural hubs, eco-living, and creative spaces. Scenic axes along the Wapu, Zhanjing, and Dongfang Rivers tie the town together, offering serene landscapes and vibrant nodes.
Penglang is more than a restoration—it’s a celebration of Jiangnan’s timeless spirit. Through thoughtful design and cultural rejuvenation, this historic town will once again thrive as a beacon of life, commerce, and community for generations to come.
