The Hong Kong Pop 60+ permanent exhibition at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum focuses on the development of Hong Kong popular music, film, video and radio programmes, as well as comics and toys. Ranging from the end of World War II to the early 2000s, this exhibition illustrates the development of Hong Kong's popular culture, featuring more than 1,000 exhibits.
Beginning with the 'Diversity & Cultural Convergence' gallery, visitors are transported to different abstracted areas reflecting different influences on Hong Kong's popular culture and diversity. The modern contemporary design and bold red, grey and white colour scheme highlight the vibrant collection of Mandarin Pop records and Cantonese Opera artefacts, creating pockets of intrigue and photo-opportunistic moments.
In the 'Radio Broadcast' gallery, exhibit forms and motifs are reminiscent of gramophones, speakers, dials, and other radio paraphrenia, creating the surfaces for interpretation and content panels. In the centre of the room, four installations of period radio sets are beautifully displayed in custom-designed showcases which anchor the gallery. Dynamic combinations of displays with graphic lightboxes and audio pods create a stylized journey through the history of Hong Kong's radio broadcasting.
The 'Music Culture' space celebrates the iconic tunes and music legends of Hong Kong. A central performance stage presents costumes worn by Hong Kong's most notable performers and celebrates popular Cantonese music produced over multiple decades. Above is a suspended circular LED screen that displays clips from famous concerts illuminated by theatrical lighting effects.
The exhibition concludes with the 'Other Popular Culture' Gallery, which displays a wider sample of Hong Kong's pop culture in other media such as toys, comics, books, posters, and art, both historically and modern, showcasing the increasing fluidity of cultural elements combining global and local influences for a vibrant and unique cultural landscape. This 'fluid cultural landscape' is represented by the organic stepped wall structures, interrupted by cuts in the curved forms which contain section panels. Projections above the displays change to reflect the latest trends and influences in contemporary Hong Kong culture.
