Excretion is one of the most fundamental human behaviors, an act that has been performed for millions of years, long before the invention of modern bathrooms. Acknowledging this basic and primitive human function, we drew inspiration from the essential purpose of a bathroom to create a design that transforms a part of Madison Square Park in Manhattan, New York. Our goal is to evoke a primal experience, one that harks back to humanity’s earliest forms of shelter and the simplicity of our beginnings.
Our design aims to offer a momentary sanctuary within the bustling urban environment of Manhattan, envisioning a structure that resembles a primitive cave, crafted from natural materials that blend seamlessly with the park's landscape. The exterior, with its raw and unrefined aesthetic, contrasts sharply with the surrounding urban architecture, inviting visitors to step away from the city's hustle and into a space of calm and reflection. Inside, the space is designed to evoke tranquility and a deep connection to nature. Soft, diffused lighting mimics the gentle play of sunlight filtering through foliage, while earthy textures and organic forms create a tactile, immersive environment.
The bathroom is more than just a bathroom—it acknowledges the ancient act of excretion and offers a space for this fundamental human activity. It serves as a sanctuary, providing a break from the physical demands of urban life and a place for mental and emotional respite. Here, users can reconnect with their inner selves and the natural world, finding peace amidst the chaos of the city.
