The University Square

The University Square is sited at the heart of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, which was designed in the 70’s and has been a space heavily concealed in a diverse of vegetation. In order to offer a serene environment with a more transparent accessibility where the university community can unwind, collaborate, and seek inspiration; the project rejuvenates the existing open space to enrich campus life and inspire sustainability. Environmental conscious and user-oriented design have always been one of the key principles at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The design team has embraced this philosophy by creating a multifunctional space that harmonises with the natural surroundings.



The conserved veteran trees of The University Square not merely serve as the natural canopy but also as a reminder of the campus's rich history and commitment to preserving its environment. The shaded spots provide a relaxing area that fosters a sense of community and belonging and encourage collaboration among students, staffs and visitors through thoughtfully designed landscape furniture, seating arrangements and gathering spaces. As a multifunctional space, the square can transform into an area for a variety of events including leisure, flag rising ceremony, banquets, a natural background for graduates photo taking and many more.



In addition to promoting social engagement, the design incorporates sustainable practices, such as the use of local plant species and relocating current vegetation to embellish other campus regions to minimise environmental impact. Pathways are designed to enhance accessibility, encourage walking while seamlessly connecting different areas of the campus. This thoughtful integration of nature and design aims to create a vibrant hub where individuals can re-energise and functionality to the heart space of the campus.



Ultimately, The University Square is envisioned as a dynamic space that serves as a model for sustainable design in educational settings. By prioritising environmental stewardship and community engagement, this project reflects a commitment to creating spaces that nurture both personal well-being and collective growth, making it a cornerstone of campus life for years to come.
