The NO PAUSE™ Project aims to challenge harmful notions of masculinity often perpetuated by men policing other men. This campaign directly addresses emotionally damaging vernacular and seeks to foster healthier conversations around men’s mental health.

Have you ever heard the term “pause”?

Initially used in jest, “pause” became a way to mock men, particularly Black and Brown men, for actions deemed “gay.” Over time, “pause culture” has escalated, forcing men to overanalyze their behaviors—like eating a hotdog or an ice cream—for fear of being labeled “homo.” While it may seem trivial, the pervasive nature of this culture has a serious and negative impact on men’s mental health. Despite its many definitions on Urban Dictionary, its damaging effects are undeniable.

The NO PAUSE™ Project was created to reshape these conversations and end the toxicity of “pause culture.” At its core is The NO PAUSE™ Game, designed to help players confront societal stigmas and pressures around masculinity. Through humor and reflection, players earn “confidence” points by exploring the absurd and mundane behaviors men police themselves about.

The campaign’s visual identity was critical in cutting through toxic masculinity. Bold and inclusive, the design balanced masculinity and femininity through its color palette, typography, and illustrations. Inspired by rough woodcuts and African brush art, the visuals offered a lighthearted entry point to a serious topic, embodying the campaign’s mission to redefine modern masculinity.

Launched on Men’s Mental Health Day 2024, the campaign received significant attention from industry and local media. The NO PAUSE™ Project was also presented to numerous nonprofit organizations providing community mental health services. These organizations eagerly incorporated the project’s materials, sharing the deck of cards at their events to spark conversations and promote change.
