A comprehensive lighting design was developed for European XFEL-Lighthouse research facility in Schenefeld, Germany that perfectly melds both daylight and artificial light. The concept is based on the idea of maximising daylight in foyer, seminar rooms and corridors, while allowing them to be both artistic and flexible.
Sustainability is always an important aspect of our lighting design. With targeted use of daylight, we were able to minimise the use of artificial light, which in turn contributes to significant energy savings. An initial daylight study helped us to determine the optimal position of the skylights. These skylights enable an even distribution of daylight, even in the depth of the room, for as long as possible without causing direct glare or harsh contrasts. The foyer, in turn, has a spatial effect that is inviting to visitors.
The artificial lighting blends harmoniously into the architecture. As temporary exhibitions are regularly held in the foyer, the space demanded a flexible lighting solution. The luminaire arrangement helps to illuminate the room evenly, allowing the exhibits to be positioned freely in the entire space. The positioning of the luminaires and the precise shielding ensure that the architecture is emphasised without disturbing its physical structure.
The seminar rooms fashion a lighting mixture that integrates both diffuse and directional light. This combination creates a stimulating and concentration-enhancing atmosphere. Recessed wallwashers emphasise the wooden wall panelling, which adds to the visual weight of the room. The flexible control of the luminaires helps to adapt to different event formats - seminars, receptions or presentations. The flexibility also makes it possible to keep the rooms optimally lit for evening events or all-day seminars.
The louvre-façade which is inspired by diffraction - one of the central research topics of this facility - allows daylight to enter the interior with a harmonious play of light and shadow.
