The "OAS/S-VESSE" installation at MEILIAN CŪN is unique fusion of art, nature, and the future. Located on the coastal sands of MEILIAN CŪN in Sanya, this installation not only bridges the gap between tradition and innovation but also emphasizes the deep connection between humans and nature. The design draws inspiration from the sails of ships, symbolizing the rich maritime culture of Hainan, as well as the wisdom of fishermen who live in harmony with the sea.
The installation’s design is deeply responsive to its surroundings. Positioned facing southwest, it interacts dynamically with the varying natural environments around it. From different perspectives, the installation transforms. At noon, the piece appears as a massive black bird resting on the beach, with its sleek design evoking awe and innovation. Its triangular sail-like form captures the essence of both fluidity and strength, mirroring the movement of the ocean and the expansive sky.
From east to west, the work blends seamlessly with the sea and sky, while the sunlight filtering through the gaps in the fabric gives the impression that the piece is floating on water. From west to east, the installation harmonizes with the lush palm trees, creating a poetic dialogue between nature and the art piece, while enhancing the visual contrast and harmony between the black structure and the vibrant greenery.
The structure's form is futuristic yet rooted in nature, resembling a bird lying on the sand or a spaceship from the future. Its black shade cloth material, traditionally used by local fishermen, links ancient practices with futuristic vision, conveying a powerful dialogue between the past and the future. This material choice enhances the work's environmental connection, highlighting a sustainable and symbiotic relationship with nature.
Emphasizes on ecological sustainability and minimal environmental impact, the design utilizes local materials like the shade cloth and reducing reliance on machinery during construction, promoting a low-carbon, sustainable approach to modern art. Through thoughtful design and collaboration with local communities, it not only showcases the beauty of nature but also encourages future exploration and innovation, making it a unique and meaningful contribution to the local cultural landscape.
