In view for the upcoming Hong Kong Interior Design Week 2025, the Hong Kong Interior Design Association has extended an open invitation for creative furniture designs. Among the noteworthy entries is “Yi Si,” a striking set comprising a working desk and bench. Drawing inspiration from the ancient Chinese study room, “Yi Si” features a hexagonal design that symbolizes "the six directions," embodying principles of harmony, unity, and completeness. The desk showcases a hexagonal top made of highly anti-scratch painted plywood, elegantly supported by folded hexagonal legs, while the bench features a contrasting configuration that complements the ensemble. A sculpted wooden strip at the desk’s far end introduces gentle undulations, mirroring the fluidity of Chinese calligraphy. Enhanced with rattan cup holders set on either side of the desk and incorporated into the bench’s sitting surface, this duo harmoniously fuses classic motifs with sustainable elements suitable for contemporary living.
The creation of these lightweight pieces utilizes advanced production techniques, with both the desk and chair legs crafted from layers of 1.5mm beech veneer sheets laminated, molded, machined, and polished to shape. This method not only allows precise control over the wood grain to maximize strength—particularly at the critical 45-degree folding angle—but also enhances aesthetic appeal by introducing a distinctive diamond pattern at the fold’s outer edge.
“Yi Si” beautifully showcases the inherent elegance of wood and resonates with the Chinese philosophy that associates wood with fire, symbolizing the year 2025. As the inaugural presentation of this thoughtful furniture set, it transcends mere functionality, embodying a blend of tradition and modern design that reflects profound cultural significance.
Anticipation is building as “Yi Si” prepares to be exhibited in both Hong Kong and Milan later this year, promising to captivate audiences with its seamless integration of heritage and innovation.
