This lighting design project for Lizhou Literature Museum (formerly the residence of Zhang Qizhao, a prominent figure in Yuyao during the Republic of China era) encompasses a comprehensive range of indoor and outdoor spaces, including the exhibition area, the entrance, the parking lot, the reading room, the auditorium, and the meeting room. Guided by the principle of “preservation alongside display”, the design artfully emphasizes the historical significance and artistic beauty of the exhibits through the interplay of light and shadow, while strictly adhering to cultural heritage conservation standards. Inspired by the Chinese Taoist philosophy of “living in seclusion within the bustling world”, the design uses points and lines as fundamental elements to create a multi-layered, harmonious, and unified lit environment.
Through meticulous lighting planning across various zones, the project achieves a seamless integration of functionality and aesthetics. Track spotlights, installed outside display showcases, offer precise brightness being adjusted from 0% to 100% to meet the specific illumination requirements of different exhibits, ensuring optimal contrast and striking visual impact. For the exhibition lighting, a warm white color temperature of 3000K is meticulously chosen to enhance the historical significance of cultural relics like the rare ancient books, creating an evocative atmosphere that deeply immerses visitors in the narrative of the past.
The lighting schemes for other areas are equally deliberate and refined: at the entrance, eight small projectors establish a sense of order and clarity, smoothly guiding both vehicles and pedestrians into the museum. In the parking lot, projectors mounted on perimeter columns evoke a distinct sense of boundary, clearly defining an enclosed space while facilitating parking. Functional spaces such as the reading room are illuminated by linear pendant lights with a 4000K color temperature, fulfilling practical lighting needs while enhancing spatial perception and comfort.
The design also takes into account its unique surroundings within a residential area. Ground-recessed lights are discreetly installed along the exterior facade, and outdoor projectors are directed inward, effectively controlling glare and preventing light pollution to ensure a harmonious coexistence with the surrounding community and passersby.
