ORIDINE is a customizable modular tableware set inspired by origami, with its concept centered on "growth." Asians have a custom of cleaning tableware by pouring hot water over it. When pouring hot water over ORIDINE, the flattened tinboards transform into 3D tinwares, offering users a novel dining experience while enhancing the interaction between diners and their dinnerware.

Leveraging the editable properties of shape-memory alloys and the malleability of tin sheets, the design integrates origami structures into traditional tin craftsmanship. The tinware realizes 2D-to-3D transformation through hot water activation, offering a seamless blend of tradition and technology. Supported by a platform and algorithms, the project enables customization and efficient supply-demand matching. Users can generate customized tinware by creating basic shapes and crease patterns, then further adjust fold parameters while dynamically previewing the folding processes. Finally, users can select their preferred hammered textures, and the skilled craftsmen will meticulously craft the pieces according to their specifications.

A parametric system powered by Grasshopper’s Crane plugin forms the technical core. We classified creases into mountain folds, valley folds, and boundary layers via node-based modeling, assigning distinct force parameters to each to simulate realistic folding behaviors. Our front-end website features real-time SVG editing and visualization, guiding users to participate in designing and customizing their favored products. To achieve the magical effect of transforming flat tableware into three-dimensional forms by pouring hot water, we developed a "sandwich structure" composed of two food-grade tin boards encapsulating a layer of memory alloy. The inner alloy, pre-edited at temperatures exceeding 320°C, can automatically transform from 2D to 3D when heated to 60-80°C.

Rooted in craftsmanship heritage, the project explores innovative fusions of materials and techniques in the digital age. By giving tinware dynamic vitality, it bridges future lifestyles with cultural preservation, ensuring traditional skills thrive in modern contexts. This design revitalizes tin craftsmanship, empowering artisans to create products that meet contemporary demands while securing a sustainable and rewarding livelihood.
