Client's Name

Kampung Boy

Country / Region

Malaysia

Kampung (village) Boy is a retro 1970s kopitiam (coffee shop in Malaysian context). With that aspect,

our team designed the kopitiam that evokes a nostalgic, rustic charm, blending traditional village

architecture with the bustling, communal vibe of a classic Malaysian coffee shop.

In terms of architectural framework, the kopitiam features cement & wooden walls, along with vintage

floral mosaic tiles, which were common while signature housing features in that era. The outer look of

the restaurant is even equipped with the real old wooden window frames, which come with peeling

paint & creaky textures, as well as a wooden glass door painted in faded green. Furthermore, we created

few wall murals relating to Malaysia’s multicultural heritage & kampung lifestyle. There are naïve child

peeking out the wooden house window, old man making traditional coffee and tea, women in traditional

kebaya outfits chatting with each other by the window, a grandfather and grandson having breakfast in

at a kopitiam. All of them are common yet beautiful scenarios which foster a sense of small-town

camaraderie.

To further engage the consumers into the classic Malaysian coffeeshop ambience, the coffeeshop is

decorated with marble-topped & wooden tables, rattan-woven chairs & lamps, open wooden shelves

displaying vintage enamel containers and old home furniture as decor. Some vintage posters, wall clock,

and wrought-iron pendant lamps with warm yellow bulbs help further enhancing the well-loved retro

ambience too.

This kopitiam would feel like a time capsule—a cozy, unpretentious space where the simplicity

of kampung life meets the lively energy of Malaysia’s coffee culture, all steeped in 1970s nostalgia. Most

importantly, It brings a laid-back vibe where people gather, chat, and enjoy traditional snacks and coffee.
