About The Entry

Concept & Inspiration

This project explores the experimental boundaries of spoon design by reinterpreting its fundamental functionality through the shape and dynamics of the human tongue. The tongue, as a muscular organ within the mouth, plays a crucial role in chewing and swallowing, making it an intriguing parallel to the traditional function of a spoon. By adopting this organic form, the design challenges conventional perceptions of utensil function and interaction.

Design Approach

The set consists of three wooden spoons, each embodying different tongue-like forms, capturing the gestures of extension, bulging, and natural curvature. Unlike typical thin-walled spoons, these designs incorporate a more voluminous and sculptural approach, minimizing the depth of the concave area while maintaining usability. This reinterpretation creates a more tactile and intuitive dining experience.

Material & Craftsmanship

Handcrafted from wood, the spoons emphasize a smooth, rounded finish that enhances the sensory experience for the user. The material choice and polished craftsmanship ensure a comfortable grip, echoing the organic softness and flexibility of the tongue itself. The interplay of form and texture enhances the user’s connection with the object, reinforcing the experimental nature of the design.

Experimental Value

This project extends the concept of product design by questioning the established norms of spoon functionality. By introducing a more sculptural and organic language, it provokes thought on how everyday objects can be reimagined through biological analogies. The design blurs the boundary between object and body, transforming a simple utensil into an evocative and immersive experience.
