Rippling Light, Flowing Clouds:Yunlin Riverside Illumination

This project revitalizes the connection between Yunlin River and the city through the design of a 1.5-kilometer-long linear waterfront park light environment, integrating nature, ecology, culture, and community. The design concept is "flowing clouds and water," using light as the brush and shadow as the ink to create a rhythmic and poetic night scene.



To protect the ecosystem, the lighting adopts a low-scale configuration, avoiding direct illumination on the water surface and riverbanks, and instead focuses on pathways and railings, using linear lighting resembling a river as directional guidance. Beyond adjusting the lighting scale, most fixtures reduce energy consumption and light pollution by lowering intensity or bulb wattage. The overall color temperature is designed to be warm and soft, creating a nighttime ambiance suitable for strolling and quiet contemplation.

Custom-designed light poles with fluid totem patterns reflect the movement of clouds and water. At key sites such as Zhongshan Bridge, Zhongzheng Walkway, and the path next to the ecological island, lighting serves symbolic functions. A guardian sculpture carved from aged driftwood is illuminated with projection lights, symbolizing memory and protection. Gobo lights display festive drawings by local children on the ground, forming a moving “Along the River of Yunlin”



Community engagement shaped the design, aligning with local needs and environmental goals. Lighting at active zones is limited to essential areas, and seasonal transitions are interpreted through light expressions based on the 24 solar terms.

Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals—Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities), Goal 13 (Climate Action), and Goal 15 (Life on Land)—this project sets a new benchmark for sustainable urban lighting, offering an immersive experience that fosters ecological awareness and community identity.
