Belle Glow

The Bélle Glow flagship store on No. 193 Hanghai Road is a transformative adaptive reuse project that reimagines a two-story podium as a contemporary multi-brand retail space. Situated at a key urban corner, the building asserts a distinct presence through a compact white form floating above a colonnade, unifying previously fragmented storefronts into a cohesive elevation. A sunken forecourt and recessed entrance blur boundaries between street and interior, inviting exploration and public interaction. Central to the design is the reinterpretation of the existing column grid. Five distinct rows of columns, each with varied material treatments—from painted white to raw concrete—guide circulation and establish a rhythmic spatial order. Exposed steel I-beams and preserved structural elements celebrate industrial heritage, creating a rich dialogue between old and new. The stairwell, conceived as an inhabitable sculpture, serves as both a circulation path and a platform for exhibitions and brand storytelling. Guided by the concept of "volume over line," light is employed to shape form, enhance perception, and layer experiences through shifting sightlines. Interior programming emphasizes openness and tactility. Floor-to-ceiling glazing dissolves visual barriers, while reclaimed timber elements and minimalist partial-height walls frame curated displays. A mirrored coffee bar near the entrance reflects the green streetscape, fostering continuity between inside and outside. Bélle Glow functions as a hybrid destination for fashion, photography, events, and café culture. Through rational spatial planning, disciplined materiality, and site-specific sensitivity, the project revitalizes a modest urban structure into a serene yet dynamic retail environment that resonates with Hangzhou’s evolving identity.
