Xiaobantian Cable-Stayed Bridge, Lugu Township

Lugu Township is rich in natural tourism resources such as tea plantations and fireflies. While vibrant during the day, the area has lacked nighttime appeal due to its remoteness and insufficient lighting, creating a gap in tourism continuity. To invigorate the nighttime economy and enhance residents’ sense of identity, this project centers on the township’s gateway landmark, the Xiaobantian Cable-Stayed Bridge. The lighting design extends the vitality of local tourism into the night, transforming the bridge’s architectural structure and cultural symbolism into a visual nightscape that connects local memory and tourism appeal—ultimately creating a new nocturnal icon for Lugu.
[Soaring in Harmony]
Inspired by the bridge’s structure, which resembles two pairs of swallows in flight, the design symbolizes harmony and good fortune. On each side of the bridge’s 12 inclined cables, gradient lighting in rainbow hues is applied to form a flowing arc of light—soft yet dynamic, like a vibrant ribbon suspended in the mountainous night sky.
[Perfect Harmony]
The main bridge structure draws from the image of stacked yuanbao (ancient Chinese ingots), with five yuanbao forming a “perfect ten” configuration. Uplighting beneath the structure enhances the rounded form of the ingots, symbolizing prosperity and thriving local industries. Rather than static displays, the lights shift over time to simulate the flickering of fireflies or the movement of clouds and mountain mist. The bridge becomes a shared memory space for both locals and visitors.
