Rising above the city, the residence faces an intriguing paradox of scale, seeking depth and meaning rather than mere altitude. Its measure lies in the ability to integrate memory, culture, and personal legacy within a single order. At such magnitude, the question was not how to impress, but how to compose coherence.
The client’s life is marked by symbols with circular resonance: the woven rain capes and hats of his coastal childhood, the ink scrolls and woodcarvings collected over decades, and the sculptural figure of the Monkey King, embodying resilience and playfulness. These pieces, each bearing weight of heritage, demanded a stage where East and West, past and present, might coexist without hierarchy. The aspiration was for a dwelling that would become a lifelong setting, a rounded conclusion and a personal legacy.
The design answered through the form of circles as structuring language. Circular thresholds framed transitions, arched recesses aligned with sculptures, and curved partitions dissolved rigid boundaries. In these measured gestures the project discovered its rhythm, as if a symphony found its key. Each element of artifact, view, or daily ritual entered in sequence, returned with variation, and resolved into harmony. The circle thus operated on several levels: a formal expression, a unifying vocabulary, and a metaphor for completeness in life itself.
Sculptures are framed without overwhelming the architecture, while calligraphy holds presence beside contemporary furnishings, balancing tradition with clarity. Yet beyond these juxtapositions, the dwelling affirms identity. For the owner, each circular frame recalls the woven hats and nets of his coastal youth, while each measured proportion lends continuity to a life of collecting. Living here is not only a matter of comfort but of recognition: the spaces remind him of where he comes from and establish a sense of completeness for where he is now. The residence closes as a quiet legacy, both a home and a reflection of self-carried into permanence.
