TORIYAMA ROBATAYAKI draws inspiration from a Tang Dynasty verse — “The mountain light delights the birds’ nature” — to reimagine a dining space where architecture, light, and emotion intertwine. Located in the bustling city of Foshan, this 350-square-meter restaurant offers a poetic refuge that evokes the serenity of nature through abstract spatial storytelling.
The journey begins with a sculptural entrance that mimics mountain ridges, formed by layered curved panels with rich textures. This creates a soft barrier between the city and the interior, inviting guests to slow down and transition into a quieter, more introspective state. The materiality blends raw and refined—wood, stone, and glass—invoking the tactile calm of a forest.
At the heart of the space lies a high-ceilinged central dining zone, where natural daylight filters through skylights to cast organic patterns on the walls, reminiscent of sunlight filtering through trees. Above the island dining area, a 3D kinetic installation responds to ambient sound, shifting form like a murmuration of birds or passing clouds—an abstract tribute to the idea of freedom and vitality.
Rather than imitate nature literally, the design distills its spirit through rhythm, material, and light. Warm wood tones, soft ambient lighting, and dynamic circulation paths converge to craft an immersive experience that stimulates both body and mind.
TORIYAMA is not merely a robata grill; it is a contemporary interpretation of “living poetically.” Within this space, diners reconnect with the gentle flow of time, the beauty of impermanence, and the quiet joy of being — a modern retreat where the sensory and the spiritual meet.
