The Fusion Garden of Shenyang MatSci Natl Lab

The Shenyang National Research Center for Materials Science is located in the Hunnan District of Shenyang, Liaoning Province. It is one of the first six national-level research centers approved for establishment by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
The design adopts"Life"as its central theme, integrating the cyclical process of life—birth, growth, fruition, Fusion, and rebirth—into the overall landscape concept.
The Fusion Garden continues the central north-south axis of the campus and serves as a publicly accessible open space where a water system weaves through and connects the main east-west building complexes. It also forms the visual backdrop to the main southern entrance, occupying an area of 1.71 hectares. The core design challenge lies in creating a landscape that reflects the identity of a national-level research institution while also responding to the everyday needs of users.
A long north-south water axis runs through the site,Water serves as the medium of connection—facilitating the fusion of people, inside and outside, past and present, space and time.
There is no excessive decoration, novel shapes, formalistic paving, or diverse material changes here. Instead, the design aims to handle each detail unconventionally within a conventional framework. Whether it's the surface treatment, edging, assembling, or height differences, every effort is made to align with the quality of the site. Inward restraint paired with outward indulgence, the ordinary enhanced with fashion, and simplicity enriched with fullness—this is the unconventional within the conventional.
