This hilltop residence is perched along the rugged coast of Sajima, southwest of Tokyo. It was conceived as a home that dissolves into its terrain, where architecture becomes part of the landscape. By embedding the structure into the site’s natural slope, the design protects the ocean views not only for its occupants but also for neighboring homes—creating a serene composition where only sky and sea remain in the frame.

The patio gently steps down from the living area toward an infinity pool, visually merging into the ocean beyond. The soffits, horizontal lines of the façade, and expansive window frames act as a subtle architectural boundary—a frame that quietly crops the view like a living canvas.

And within this frame emerges Mount Fuji, Japan’s tallest and most revered mountain. Long considered a symbol of natural beauty and spiritual reverence, to gaze directly upon Mount Fuji from one’s home is extraordinarily rare and deeply cherished in Japanese culture.

Here, the mountain appears between sea and sky, a sacred axis composed within the landscape, offering calm centrality and a sense of timeless luxury.

At dusk, the sky and water become one. The silhouette of Fuji glows gently against the fading light, as nature’s subtle shifts breathe life into the space.

A floating BBQ lounge is placed within the pool itself. By day, it serves as a breezy gathering space; at night, underwater lighting transforms it into a glowing lantern, hovering just above the water’s surface like an illusion.

Finishes include weathered timber that softens over time, stone evoking geological strata, and tiles that reflect the sky—each material in dialogue with wind, water, and light, creating a rich, sensory connection with nature.

This deck is not merely an outdoor extension.

It is a spatial device for reconnection—a floating landscape where time, sky, and water harmonize with human perception.
