ABAS Taiwan Heritage Set: Daan Cultural Kaoliang Collection

ABAS Distillery (Daan Mellow Co., Ltd.) is a boutique Kaoliang liquor brand dedicated to translating local heritage into contemporary design. Its debut dual-bottle gift set takes the form of a book—inviting the recipient to open and enter a story told through both spirit and space.
The set contains two original, unblended liquors, each inspired by historic landmarks of Daan, a coastal village in Taichung, Taiwan. This region, shaped by wind and tide, is slowly disappearing, making its cultural preservation all the more urgent.
The packaging features textured uncoated art paper, evoking a sense of raw materiality and memory. Ink-style landscape illustrations flow across the surface, while fine gold-foiled lines trace a subtle path between two place-based narratives: Huweiliao House, a traditional Pingpu indigenous structure, and the Centennial Sand-Protecting Wall, a remnant of the region’s early coastal defense.
The design adopts a minimal yet evocative visual language, balancing historical resonance with contemporary aesthetics. The contrast between soft texture and precise metallic linework symbolizes the tension between erosion and endurance, disappearance and remembrance.
By merging traditional distillation with cultural storytelling, ABAS Distillery positions liquor not just as a product, but as a vessel of place-based identity. The gift set reflects the values of design as preservation—where packaging becomes a medium for history, and every detail carries the spirit of the land.
