This project reimagines Abu Hadriyah Road in Dammam as more than a transport corridor—it becomes a monumental gateway rooted in the geology and culture of Eastern Arabia. Inspired by the Rus Formation, vast salt beds lying beneath the desert, the design rises as a sculptural canopy shaped by the natural process of salt uplift. The form transforms infrastructure into a symbolic landmark that unites heritage, ecology, and mobility.
The crossing integrates layered ecological and social spaces: shaded gardens, elevated walkways, and gathering areas woven into a porous canopy. These create microclimates of respite in the harsh desert, combining native planting with interactive art, water features, and educational installations. Visitors encounter immersive projections, cultural narratives, and panoramic overlooks, forging links between land, memory, and future growth.
By day, the canopy frames shifting patterns of light and shadow, offering shaded retreats and intimate plazas. By night, it transforms into a radiant beacon—fiber-optic lighting, star-inspired fountains, and glowing projections animate the structure, celebrating both celestial rhythms and the geological forces beneath. This dual identity ensures the gateway is not only a piece of infrastructure but also a vibrant cultural landmark experienced by travelers and residents alike.
Sustainability is embedded in the design through lightweight shell structures, passive cooling strategies, renewable energy integration, and planting systems that encourage biodiversity. The project transforms leftover highway space into an active ecological corridor, while also improving safety by providing pedestrian and cycling connections across the road.
Ultimately, Uplifted by Salt embodies Saudi Arabia’s Vision by linking regional mobility with cultural identity and resilience. It is not only a bridge but a stage for collective memory—a place where geology, community, and imagination converge to inspire future generations.
