Another Side Community Center reimagines public space in San Francisco’s Mission District by transforming the natural slope into an inhabited ground plane where the city’s everyday rhythms flow into architecture. The design dissolves the boundary between site and structure, unfolding as a continuous civic landscape that merges circulation, gathering, and recreation into one fluid system. Above this terrain, a bold lifted volume crowns the composition, establishing a new urban landmark visible across the district and anchoring the community within the larger city.
The project’s identity emerges from the juxtaposition of layered realms. At the base, one wing opens directly to the street with cafés and retail, ensuring a lively and accessible edge, while the other contains memorial spaces dedicated to ritual and remembrance, offering quiet contrast. Above them, an urban park stretches across the site, forming a civic terrace where residents can pause, gather, and enjoy open green space within the dense fabric of the Mission. Hovering over this plateau, the lifted structure continues the duality: one side configured for exhibitions and cultural events, the other reserved for ceremonial halls and spaces of reflection. Together, these stacked layers create a civic “sandwich” where commerce and commemoration, vibrancy and silence, coexist within one architectural framework.
Generous openings are carved into the building’s shell, drawing daylight and fresh air deep into the interiors while framing outward views of the surrounding city. Through this calibrated porosity, the architecture becomes both container and connector — reflective of history yet animated by contemporary life. The result is a civic landmark that is at once solemn and active, where memory, culture, and community converge in a single architectural gesture.
