The overall design concept of the Guangzhou Huangpu River Pedestrian Bridge integrates seamlessly with its surroundings while reflecting Lingnan cultural characteristics. The project addresses present and future transportation needs through a multi-level approach, achieving major outcomes with minimal intervention to provide an eco-friendly and pleasant walking experience. It establishes a dynamic, world-class waterfront offering diverse scenery and vibrant public space.
Inspired by “A Banyan by the Waterfront, a Haven for Waterbirds,” the bridge evokes the image of a banyan tree growing gracefully by the river, embodying Lingnan’s aesthetic. A subtly arched elevation shields the light rail behind while reconnecting the ecologically fragmented banks. Walking across, one enjoys the restored river landscape and the “Mirror of Guangzhou” vista.
Spanning 280.7 meters east-west, the bridge is wider in the center and tapers at both ends. It features separate lanes for slow and fast pedestrians, divided by landscaped planters and inclined cable-stayed arches.
The steel structure adopts a combined arch and cable-stayed system, highlighting an exposed structural aesthetic. The facade is clad in anodized aluminum panels aligned with handrail divisions, enhancing visual rhythm. Streamlined planters filled with native Lingnan flowers reinforce Guangzhou’s identity as the City of Flowers. The edges are fitted with custom UHPC seating, offering comfortable rest areas with panoramic views.
More than a mere crossing, the Guangzhou Huangpu River Pedestrian Bridge serves as a scenic and artistic landmark. It provides a new urban perspective, serving as a balcony over the Pearl River New Town, and adds a distinctive touch to Guangzhou’s high-quality development.
