Knee joint rehabilitation is a long and challenging process, often hindered by fragmented treatment approaches and the lack of effective muscle-strengthening solutions. Traditional rehabilitation primarily focuses on joint mobility while neglecting the critical role of muscle strength recovery in regaining stability and function. Additionally, patients frequently need to switch between multiple rehabilitation devices at different stages, leading to interruptions in their progress and lower adherence to training programs.
Solution Overview: Kneeviva
Kneeviva is an intelligent knee rehabilitation device designed to address these issues by offering a seamless, personalized, and data-driven recovery experience. It integrates Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS), real-time training monitoring, and a modular wearable design, providing users with an all-in-one solution that adapts to their recovery journey.
Design Process
To ensure Kneeviva meets the real needs of rehabilitation patients, we conducted an in-depth research and design process, focusing on user experience, functionality, and clinical effectiveness. Our journey began with on-site research at rehabilitation centers, where we observed rehabilitation sessions and interviewed both patients and physiotherapists. These insights helped us identify key pain points, such as the lack of effective muscle-strengthening tools, the inconvenience of switching between multiple devices, and the difficulty of maintaining rehabilitation consistency at home.
To refine the design, we conducted ergonomic experiments to analyze the optimal electrode placement, comfort levels, and usability for different body types. Through multiple iterations of physical prototyping, including 3D-printed models, we tested the wearability, modular attachment mechanisms, and interface design. This iterative approach allowed us to balance functionality, comfort, and ease of use, ensuring that Kneeviva seamlessly integrates into users’ rehabilitation routines.
Core Innovation
Kneeviva’s core innovation lies in its intelligent muscle strength training system, which combines low-frequency EMS with resistance-based exercises. The device delivers precise electrical pulses to stimulate muscle contractions, helping users regain strength efficiently. Unlike traditional passive stimulation, Kneeviva encourages active participation, allowing users to adjust resistance levels and engage in progressive strength training tailored to their rehabilitation needs. The flexible electrode system adapts to different muscle groups, ensuring targeted stimulation and optimal training outcomes.
