At live festivals, the energy of the crowd and the immediacy of the performance are unforgettable. But not everyone can be there in person - until now.
The BBC Radio 1 Dance Portal makes it possible for audiences to step into a BBC live event - dancing front row at Rave Lounge and Big Weekend, immersed in the atmosphere of a live DJ set - all from their browser.
Gaming platforms have replaced the television for younger audiences, becoming digital spaces for connection, creativity and entertainment. The Dance Portal taps into this cultural shift, using immersive technology to make live content more accessible, interactive and engaging. It’s a new way to bring programming to audiences who live online.
Over three days of Big Weekend, audiences experienced hours of DJ sets virtually in the Dance Portal. Big Weekend was the first major outdoor festival to have select performances broadcast in real time across radio, TV, and a browser-based immersive venue.
Audiences joined via a simple URL on mobile or desktop, appearing as avatars, interacting socially, and sharing live energy together. Unlike avatar-based virtual concerts or pre-recorded visuals, the Dance Portal streamed real performers in photorealistic 3D, preserving the authenticity and energy of live performance. People didn’t just watch a broadcast - they shared a moment.
Young audiences described a powerful sense of “being there,” connecting with the BBC in ways traditional formats cannot replicate. Browser optimisation removed barriers, requiring no headsets or downloads, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility.
The Dance Portal is more than a one-off experiment. It’s a hybrid format that layers traditional live radio and TV with immersive broadcasting, creating festival experiences that extend beyond physical space. Audiences can explore, interact, and feel part of a community while performers are captured authentically.
This project demonstrates how live digital experiences can be authentic and shared. By meeting audiences where they already live (online, social, and connected), the Dance Portal sets a new standard for creative broadcasting and proves that immersive, interactive formats can elevate traditional broadcast.
