Ningbo Color Embroidery refers to embroidered works with various patterns, crafted on silk fabrics using gold and silver threads alongside colored threads of other hues. The initial vision of the project was to establish an exclusive exhibition space for this local intangible cultural heritage (ICH) of Ningbo, enabling more people to appreciate the exquisite craftsmanship of this heritage and supporting the inheritance and development of ICH culture. As the design concept continued to expand, the client further hoped that this space would go beyond a single field and become a fertile ground for promoting the exchange and interaction of various cultural and artistic forms.Ningbo was historically known as "Mingzhou". The term "Mingzhou Artisans Art Centre" not only echoes the city's historical and cultural context but also highlights the respect for artisans' craftsmanship and the mission of inheritance.
Stepping into the Art Center, the spiral staircase in the atrium is undoubtedly the visual focal point, whose design inspiration is subtly derived from the concept of silk threads in embroidery. If the upward-spiraling staircase is compared to a vertically arranged "warp thread", then the four horizontally distributed floors are like four "weft threads". The "warp thread" weaves and winds between the "weft threads" — this not only creates a flexible sense of hierarchy in space, but also implicitly aligns with the core logic of interlaced warp and weft in embroidery craftsmanship. In this way, intangible cultural heritage elements are naturally presented through modern architectural language, achieving an ingenious dialogue between tradition and contemporary.
