The design of OPUS ONE Residence is guided by two key concepts: "Contemporary" and "Civilization." Following the architectural language of the overall project and responding to the urban fabric, the design team drew inspiration from Louis Kahn’s reflection on "Silence and Light," translating it into the interior design.
The team believes that refining cultural elements does not simply mean converting them into superficial symbols. Hence, the overall design language of the space avoids overt signs or forms. Instead, it is guided by principles of restraint, tranquility, order, and inclusiveness, showcasing an artistic aesthetic and lifestyle that reflects both global and Shanghai-specific attributes.
The residential space is formed by combining two separate units. After merging and reorganizing two symmetrical layouts, the various areas remain interconnected yet independent, achieving a gradual transition from universality to individuality, and from public to private. A circular flow begins at the elevator lobby: as two separate units are combined into one, the elevator lobby transforms from a public area into a private space, integrating into the hierarchy and order of the residence.
The gently flowing Huangpu River is the most valuable asset of this home. It belongs to vibrant nature while also embracing the culture and civilization of Shanghai across different eras. All spaces facing the river are treated with an architectural approach by LSD, avoiding decorative embellishments to invite the river views into the interior and maximize the preservation of natural light.
One of the core design principles is "creating ambiguity." By blurring spatial boundaries, several "X spaces" are incorporated to serve the diverse and complex needs of contemporary living. These "X spaces" take the form of a small lounge area in the living room, a book gallery connecting the living and dining areas, an indoor garden adjacent to the dining room, and a secluded family leisure room. Their forms and functions are flexible and versatile, both echoing and independent of the main spaces, creating personalized corners tailored to the homeowner’s needs.
