We designed a one-building hotel in Niseko, one of the world’s most renowned ski resorts. Niseko is celebrated for its abundant powder snow and the majestic view of Mt. Yotei, often referred to as the “Ezo Fuji.” The project, situated on a sloping site, was conceived as a tranquil retreat that embraces unobstructed mountain views. Through architecture that deeply responds to the surrounding natural environment, the aim was to create a place where the essence of the land can be truly experienced. Within a framework of contemporary hospitality and comfort, guests can sense the rhythms of light, snow, wind, and silence.
To maximize the potential of the site, a sequence of openings was positioned to frame Mt. Yotei from various angles, allowing light and views to flow smoothly into the interior. While the exterior is primarily composed of glass, concrete panels and ornamental steel elements are arranged in response to interior functions, forming a façade with variation and depth. The interplay between transparency and solidity expresses a balance between protection and openness, reflecting Niseko’s dual nature—its harsh climate and its gentle beauty.
The interior is enveloped in quiet refinement and an honest expression of materials. Locally sourced Niseko timber and plaster finishes mixed with regional aggregates highlight the textures of the materials, giving the space a distinctly local character. Subdued tones, soft lighting, and meticulous detailing foster harmony with nature, embodying Japanese craftsmanship and the aesthetics of restraint.
Spanning the fourth and fifth floors, the spa area includes a sauna, cold bath, and heated pool, allowing guests to enjoy a wellness experience throughout the year. The aluminum ceiling, shaped in homage to the contours of Mt. Yotei’s terrain, gently diffuses natural and snow-reflected light, creating an atmosphere that embodies the generosity of the surrounding landscape. This blurs the boundary between inside and outside, enhancing the sense of unity with nature.
Our goal was to create a space in which the genius loci of Niseko—the spirit of the place—can be perceived both visually and tactilely.
