Between Ebbs and Flows –International Contemporary Art Exhib

Curated by Wu Chia-Rong, this exhibition originates from her lived experience on the island and develops three core themes: regional landscape culture, island consciousness, and the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature. Artists Huang Han-Po, Pan Jin, Li Kin, Li Ying-Jung, and Luca Bonaccorsi are invited to explore the fluid and interdependent relationship among people, the island, and the sea through new media and mixed-media installation works.
The first theme, landscape and culture, reflects how Penghu’s natural features and historical traces shape more than just the physical environment—they serve as vessels of memory and cultural identity. Through diverse media, the artists reinterpret how the landscape influences local ways of living, emotional connections, and the sense of belonging.
The second theme, island consciousness, centers on the unique isolation, vulnerability, and ocean-bound lifestyle of Penghu. Through imagery of harbors, tides, rituals, and the sound of waves, the artworks express the sea as both boundary and bridge, revealing the islanders’ deep attachment to their homeland and their sensitivity to the environment.
The third theme, human–nature symbiosis, responds to the forces of globalization and modernization. The exhibition reflects on how the notion of “home” is reshaped on the island and how local culture adapts under external pressures. The artists call for awareness of ecological and cultural sustainability through their observations of shifting landscapes.
Across regions and cultures, the exhibition highlights the sea’s inherent qualities of fluidity, uncertainty, and boundlessness. By moving between these shifting states, the exhibition invites viewers to reconsider the cultural borders and contemporary narratives of island life—between ebbs and flows.
