Located on the West Bund in Shanghai's Xuhui District, the project utilizes an abandoned wharf area for its creative vision. In an era where information surges like tidal waves, the Huangpu River's currents resonate not only as a natural echo but also as a digital metaphor.
Drawing inspiration from the waves, the team wove hundreds of LED tubes into undulating ‘waves of light’, merging the river's rhythm with the pulse of data. This creates a harmony between nature and the city, resonating the digital tide with natural cadence. Within this wave, nature and digital, abstraction and concreteness intertwine: cold data no longer resides in algorithmic backends but is translated into tangible light and shadow, resonating with the city's pulse and people's daily lives.
The installation employs a composite light structure combining fluorescent tubes and point light sources, creating a three-dimensional interplay of flowing lines and granular textures that enriches the visual experience. In its interactive lighting expression, the installation operates based on real-time environmental data, transforming information such as wind speed, temperature, humidity, and noise into rhythmic light patterns that exhibit dynamic characteristics over time. Additionally, addressing the irregular arrangement of light fixtures, a 3D spatial mapping algorithm enables continuous light flow within the three-dimensional structure, expressing the direction and rhythm of waves. Technically, the installation employs a distributed control system combining SPI and DMX protocols to achieve unified scheduling of high-density point lights and tubes, ensuring stability for long-term outdoor operation of large-scale installations. Simultaneously, the system supports synchronized light-sound interactions, aligning visual transformations with ambient soundscapes to create an immersive dynamic experience.
The installation's sensors remain entirely concealed, allowing visitors to trigger light responses through natural gestures: a wave of the hand elicits luminous reactions, fostering participatory engagement within the resonance between nature and technology.
