MixC Pearl Dream is a commercial lighting and installation project created for Hangzhou MIXC, a flagship luxury shopping destination that has long shaped the city’s fashion and lifestyle trends.
Hangzhou, historically known as Lin’an, was the capital of the Southern Song Dynasty and was described by Marco Polo as the “City of Heaven.” During this period, pearls—together with silk, tea, and incense—were treasured symbols of urban elegance, craftsmanship, and cultural confidence. Pearls also formed a distinctive aesthetic language within royal ceremonial adornments, characterized by geometric order, layered composition, and restrained radiance.
Drawing from this cultural heritage, MixC Pearl Dream translates the historical symbolism of pearls into a contemporary lighting experience. Inspired by the geometric arrangements of pearls in imperial crowns—such as rhombus patterns, symmetry, and rhythmic layering—the project abstracts traditional ornamentation into modern lighting installations that resonate with today’s urban and commercial context.
The lighting design unfolds across multiple spatial interfaces within the MIXC complex. A large-scale cross-street installation functions as a luminous gateway and visual landmark. Streetscape lighting integrates pearl-like points of light into surrounding greenery, enhancing pedestrian experience and atmosphere. The sunken plaza is transformed into an immersive “pearl courtyard” that encourages gathering and interaction, while architectural façades are subtly adorned with refined lighting accents that echo the overall theme without overpowering the architecture.
Rather than serving as decoration alone, lighting is conceived as an emotional and spatial medium—guiding movement, defining spatial hierarchy, and reinforcing brand identity. The gentle radiance and elegant restraint of pearls reflect MIXC’s positioning as a leader in contemporary luxury retail, balancing commercial vitality with cultural depth.
As night falls, layers of pearl-like light envelop Hangzhou MIXC, harmonizing with the surrounding skyline and redefining the urban nightscape. At dawn, the light recedes into the architecture, leaving behind a quiet brilliance—an urban space where history, commerce, and contemporary aesthetics coexist in lasting harmony.
